Persephone Vase
Hand built with a white stoneware clay, under glazed with beige, and carved imagery of Persephone with one foot in the Underworld and one foot in Spring. 12 inches tall x 10 inches wide.
Persephone is the goddess of Spring according to Greek mythology. She is married to Hades spends 6 months of every year in the Underworld. Persephone symbolizes life in the midst of death and light in the midst of darkness. She is "you have to have dark times to recognize the good ones when they come" embodied. She represents abundance after scarcity, food after hunger, growth after dormancy.
These vases were all a huge experiment and foray into a new type of pottery. They’re all a little imperfect (cosmetic cracks). But given their symbolism and the time that went into them, I’m going to sell them for $150 for each large sized vase and donate all $150 to charities that embody their figure’s characteristics. The sales for Persephone will go to United Farm Workers to honor and protect the lives of those who work with the land through the changing seasons and bring the abundance of Spring to our tables.
